Race to Adventure!

Race to AdventureThe Wolf is howling crazy about the new Spirit of the Century board game: Race to Adventure! AND… Big Bad Con is the first to host a Race to Adventure Tournament!

Are you a Spirit of the Century fan or just a pulp adventure enthusiast? Would you like to get a sneak peek at Evil Hat’s first board game months before it hits the stores? Do you have 20 mins to spare to stop Doctor Methuselah, Shadow Mathemagician, from overpowering the poor people of the UK? Then join the co-designer of the game for the Friday teach and casual play of Race to Adventure! – The Spirit of the Century Exploration Game. It’s the best way to prep for the Saturday and Sunday tournaments, where you can win the out-of-print Spirit of the Season, featuring characters and rules compatible with both Spirit of the Century and Truth & Justice!

Since Race to Adventure! hasn’t gone to print yet, you’ll be playing the early prototype. So yes, there WILL be cool art on the cards … eventually! Come race around the globe with us!

Three events will be run by co-creator Eric Lytle:

Friday (teaching and casual play)
Saturday (Tournament)
Sunday (Tournament)

The Wolf has summoned a Four-Eyed Demon!

Mike BoganMike Bogan, the GM who brought you “Between a Heavenly and a Hellish Place” (In Nomine – 2006), “In the Aching Night (Promethean – 2007), “Go Ask Alice” (Wushu – 2008), “The Good, the Bad and the Godly” (Scion – 2009), “The Lovecraft Files” (Edge of Midnight – 2010), and “Ashes to Ashes” (FATE – 2011) now presents his newest gaming venture:

Four-Eyed Demon

“My vision for Four-Eyed Demon is to push boundaries, experiment with collaborative storytelling, encourage descriptive narrative and ultimately evoke strong emotional responses from the players. I am going to touch on very controversial subject matter often, but not always. If you play in one of my games, come with an open and experimental mind.” – Mike Bogan

The Wolf can say, from his very own personal experience, this exactly what Mike is capable of! He was in that In Nomine game and he was MOVED!

Big Bad Con is proud to present the first of the Four-Eyed Demon (FED) games: Zom Bee Moo Vee and Devices of a Mysterious and Insidious Nature. If you want to be in a game what will get under your skin, you want to be in these games!

Mike’s previous projects (read: gamer cred)

Mike was a founding member of Good Omens
Mike is a winner of the GM Throwdown at Endgame where he was dubbed The Ultimate Superfly TNT Dolemite GM Ninja of All Time
Mike is a contestant in Big Bad GM and looks to take the crown!

Imperial Academy Dropouts

The Imperial Academy Dropouts will be making their inaugural appearance at Big Bad Con!

As they are new to the con scene, The Wolf did a little sniffing around to find out if Grandma had any dirt on these guys. It turns out, she does.

“They’ve been kicked out of cantinas from Coruscant to Tatooine.”
“They pub crawled the Kessel Run”
“Once the lead singer got punched in the face by Han Solo because he said the Enterprise was faster.”

Their set list will include Re: Your Brains, Conventional Lover and more nerd rock that the Woodcutter can shake a stick at!

They will be performing Friday night at the Big Bad Party in the Fountain Room. Be there!

The Baddest Judges in Town

Big Bad Con is coming up soon and with it will be the biggest GM show down this side of the Black Forest!

Big Bad GM wouldn’t be complete without four tough-as-nails judges there to keep these contestants in line.  The Wolf is proud to introduce:
Matt SteeleMatt Steele! What? How is that now? Matt has been a player in the GM Throwdown, a contestant and now a judge? Yes, this rabbit wears many hats.

Matt has seen the ins and outs of the GM competition industry.  He knows all the dirty tricks and closed door deals the GMs will try to pull. So I give you this warning GMs: Beware! The rabbit is watching you!

Matt writes about himself: “For a horror guy, it’s a bummer to find out that your Chinese astrology sign is the rabbit. Not very scary. I like the seeming contradiction of the cute, fluffy bunny played against horror. I’ve owned two rabbits, and I assure you, they are brutal, vicious creatures.”

Follow @TerrorRabbit or see his mad creations at terrorrabbit.com

Veteran GM JudgeBruce Harlick. Don’t let that smiling face fool you! Bruce invented the slide rule for GM Awesomeness! Bruce has judged for the previous two GM Throwdown events hosted at EndGame and he’s bringing his expertise to Big Bad Con.  As tough a judge as he might be, The Wolf has one piece of advice that might earn you some brownie points with this GMing Giant:

I’m a big sucker for classic superhero stories, of heroes facing overwhelming odds and being forced to make tough moral choices, and of villains being offered a chance to walk the path to redemption. I like to explore what makes good good, and what makes evil evil, and just how hard it is to walk the narrow line between the two.” – Bruce Harlick on CoX

You can follow Bruce @BruceHH or view his Live Journal but to really know the man, you must first face in him a duel to the death, or you know, to the best GM.

Leonard BalseraLeonard Balsera. One man who knows Fate inside and out, because, frankly – he helped write the damn thing. Please welcome Leonard Balsera, lead system developer of the Dresden Files RPG and writer for Spirit of the Century, as the fourth Big Bad Judge.

If there is a way to run Fate, he’s tried it. If there’s a Fate hack for a quirky high concept, he’s done it. If there’s a dirty trick that Fate can pull, he can make it dirtier. His collection of Fate system notes could kill a man or stop a bullet, perhaps at the same time. Evil Hat is wise to keep his mind distracted by drop-shipments of booze and Legos, lest he try to take Fate and conquer the planet. Leonard Balsera is coming, from the depths of Sin City, to test the mettle of the best Fate GMs as only one of its developers can.

He gives only this, for the contestants: “Do you make the game? Or does the game make you?”

Shaun sub-1Shaun Hayworth, aka This Modern Death, aka Shaun sub-1, aka guitar solo maniac of the Big Bad Band. Shaun is a podcaster, GM, father, and good friend of The Wolf.  He’s also got a mind that is sharp as a tack. Be prepared GMs, your performance will be observed, analyzed and evaluated by a this mad judging machine!

If you want to butter up to Shaun before the con (heh, like that will work) or just find out about Baby Tycho’s mad adventures find him @SCHayworth.

Big Bad Con wants You!

Hey all!

Big Bad Con is coming up in October (the 7-9th in Oakland, CA) and we have been working round the clock to make this an awesome three days of gaming. This is a great opportunity for folks to meet-up, make new contacts in the community, and game like crazy.

But we still need a few things, which is where you can help.

  • Games! We are looking for GMs to add to our schedule of great games. (submit a game here)
  • Your voice. We really need people to find out about Big Bad Con. Helps us spread the word by sounding off on your various forms of social media!
  • Rooms booked at The Oakland Airport Hilton. It’s how we cover a majority of our costs, so we could really use folks, even locals, to book rooms at the event hotel. (booking)

Finally, BBC is more than just a con, it’s a way for our community to give back.  We are supporting Doctors Without Borders, the Alameda County Food Bank, and (from EndGame) Child’s Play.
