Oh my look at all those games!

We’ve started to fill in the upcoming games and events for Big Bad Con 2016! And there are more games in the submission pipeline! There’s some amazing stuff in there that I’m certainly excited about…

  • John Harper brings the genre mashing madness with World of Dungeons: Breakers, a game where a magical fantasy realm collides with 21st century Earth!
  • Jason Morningstar brings his wonderfully odd gaming sensibility with Apportionment, a “Freeform Committee larp” sequel to Sirai Civil War and an epic 16 player four table game of The Warren called Grand Warren.
  • Make a Game in and Hour! a young adults only game design panel with Jason Morningstar and Aaron Vanek
  • Our special guest Jessica Price will be running multiple games of the Pathfinder RPG
  • The amazing GM Bryanna Hitchcock is back bringing with her some solid Monster of the Week fun — Creature Features!
  • Get in deep with some cinematic cyberpunk action with GM Stephen Hood running a two part game of Always/Never/Now
  • Go fetch some fun with Liz Ruifrok’s game Pugmire – A Diamond in the Ruff, a world where humans are long gone and you are on a quest to become a good Dog by the princess Yosha!
  • Multiple games of The Skeletons allowing you to play as you guessed it skeletons, one run by the game designer Jason Morningstar and the other by Dennis B. Mordred
  • Set forth on some legendary action to The Red Mountain with GM Mike Murry running Legend of the Elements a PbtA based on Avatar: The Last Airbender!

We still have room for a few more so submit your game or event now!

All this is awesome but when is game sign up?

Game sign up for Big Bad Con 2016 will start in mid September. This year we will be rolling out game signups in three phases:

  • Phase I (9/10 at noon PST) — everyone is allowed to sign up to a maximum of 2 games
  • Phase II (9/17 at noon PST) — everyone is allowed to sign up to a maximum of 4 games
  • Phase III (9/24 at noon PST) — game signups limited only by your schedule, game availability, and your ability to time travel or clone yourself*

* Time travelers with separate instances of themselves must each purchase separate passes to Big Bad Con. Android clones must show that they are at least level 6 Turing compliant and present an official Asimov law certificate to come to Big Bad Con. Biological clones must swear under oath that they have never seen a David Cronenberg film.

Big Bad Gauntlet

Big Bad Gauntlet_02This year, in place of the previous Big Bad GM competition, we are debuting a new event — The Big Bad Gauntlet. BBG is a new co-op game structure that pits both the players and the GMs against a single adversary.

Instead of the GMs running separate games in competition against one another for a single winning title as BBGM has done, Big Bad Gauntlet creates a larger framework that includes all of the GMs and their players at the tables, and sets the GMs up to lead their games in the same world in parallel, or possibly even covertly collaboratively, with one another.

The challenges and opposition will be present in the form of the judges (Agents) and the director (the Adversary), who are all in role within the fairy tale world of the Gauntlet as well as acting as meta-level arbiters and influencers with power over the GMs and players.

The power structure is intentionally uneven to heighten intensity and raise the stakes for the GMs, who will be challenged to both respond to the in-game wants and needs of their players as well as the obstacles imposed by the Adversary. Each table will represent a faction of fairy tale creatures who have become isolated from each other and can only communicate to other tables (factions) though the agents of the Adversary.

The Gauntlet will be run with modified Fate mechanics, simplified to prioritize and encourage collaborative storytelling and narrative negotiation.

One more unique detail about BBG will be audience participation. Audience members will be invited to engage with the players, GMs, judges, and director. The audience will be able to use their power as active witnesses to try to sway the decisions of the judges and director, but will have to decide individually which side they are on.

Have you got what it takes to make it through the Big Bad Gauntlet? Here are the links to sign up.

Friend and Foes Kickstarter Launch Party!

Friends & FoesWylliam Judd, creator of Friends and Foes will hosting a Kickstarter Launch party at Big Bad Con. Wylliam will be running two tables of Friends and Foes in the Empire Room on Sunday from 10AM-4PM. Games play is about and hour and there is no need to sign up, just come by and check it out!

“Friends & Foes is a fantasy board game guided by modern game design principles. It features simultaneous turns, has no player elimination and plays in 45-75 minutes. Choose from seven unique and customizable characters in this team fantasy brawler.

It’s easy to learn and to teach but every decision matters as you build your strategy throughout the game. The characters – the Enforcer, Berserker, Assassin, Duelist, Fire Archer, Storm Caller or Warden – each have a unique play style and immersive feel. Once you have a few games under your belt you can start experimenting with designing your own character by choosing your own abilities.”

Come on down to the Empire Room and check it out and enjoy some pizza courtesy of Wylliam while you’re at it!

No booking… just show up and play!
