Wolf Den Under Construction

The Wolf met today with the Hilton and found out that Building 5 (where we normally host the con) will be undergoing renovation while we’re there. We live in exciting times!

There is good news though!

Building 3 is just down the hall from Building 5, and we’re getting 19 private gaming rooms in there that:

  • Are all on the ground floor
  • Will have the beds removed (previously they were just going to be turn up against the wall)
  • Have patios in some of the rooms
  • Will all be ready for use by 3PM on Friday (previously 1/2 the rooms weren’t available till 6PM)

Also the hotel has throw in a few extras:

  • We’ll have a second reception/lobby/hangout area in Building 3 (more hangout space).
  • All the guests rooms (which will now be in Building 3) will have mini-fridges included.

Building 5 will still be used for Games on Demand, LARPs, open gaming, and other large events!

Big Bad Con Scholarship Fund

Big Bad Con is committed to cultivating a spectacular and diverse gaming community. Our Scholarship Fund goes towards travel, hotel, and badge fees for attendees from marginalized groups who need assistance. In 2019 we were able to offer 20 scholarships up from 13 in 2018, 11 in 2017, up from 7 in 2016, and 4 in 2015.

To support diversity at Big Bad Con, these funds will go to help financially challenged women, people of color, disabled, and lgbtqia+ individuals attend the con. We will use it to cover hotel rooms ($135+/night), convention badges ($60), and other necessary fees. Depending on the number of applicants, we may be able cover full or partial costs.

Timeline

Scholarship applications are currently closed. We’re reviewing them now and will reach out to applicants by early September.

Contributions

If you would like to contribute to the Scholarship Fund, please click the donation button below. Any contributions made after September will be set aside for next year’s fund. Thank you very much for your support!

Hotel Update for 2015

The Wolf, Little Red, H & G, and even the Goats Gruff have been working their tails off hunting for a gaming den for 2015.

After talking with 50+ hotels, as far south as Santa Clara, San Jose, and Fremont, as far west as San Francisco, as far north as El Cerrito and Pinole, and as far east as Walnut Creek, San Ramon, and Dublin, we’ve finally come full circle back to the Oakland Airport Hilton.

The good news.

Hilton Corporate has dropped the spurious charges as of 4/22. More good news. Since we had already been talking to the Hilton, they have held our space for October 16-18.

The challenging part.

Last year there was some confusion about the private rooms (specifically if we would pay for them the Thursday night before the con in order to ensure they would be ready on Friday). That’s where the extra charges came from. This year we’re all trying to be very careful to avoid that confusion in 2015. Unfortunately words like “guarantee” are very important to the con (we need to make sure rooms are ready when we have games scheduled) but unpopular with the Hilton (or perhaps just the Hilton’s lawyers). We also saw several fees jump up this year as well as some brand new ones.  All of these conspire to make the con much more expensive this year, so we’re working on removing or at least reducing those where we can.

We’ve been talking to the Hilton almost every day for the last month, but often changes need several approvals, so even though we’ve been diligent, there have been several delays. Little Red will keep you posted with more frequent updates on Facebook and twitter.

Before signing off, we want to thank some of the amazing people that have helped the con find a home this year.

Out Hotel Liaisons: Michael Thomas, J Li, and Vincent Salzillo.

Our Contract Reviewers: Kristin Firth, Brian Williams, and Mark Diaz Truman.

Folks who have put us in contact with other hotels: Kris Miller from CelestiCon, David Jones, Greg Wirth, Antonio Morton, Tess Meyer, and more

Finally, The Wolf’s eternal gratitude to Eric Ullman, who has been tirelessly sending emails, making phone calls, and driving to the Hilton for visits, in order to bring this one home for us. There would be no Big Bad Con without Eric.

The Hotel Hunt is on!

Hotel_ImageYesterday the Hilton sent confirmation that they will not wave the overcharge from last year, and that it must be paid before we can book there again.

So, the hunt for another home is on! While nobody has taken the Hotel Liason position yet (though many people have contacted The Wolf to offer support, you all rock!) we still would benefit quite a bit from crowd-sourcing leads.

This is what the con is looking for in a hotel:

  • Located in the East Bay
  • Has 5500+ square feet of meeting room space (preferably broken up into several smaller rooms)
  • Is willing to convert private rooms into game rooms
  • Close to multiple food options
  • Reasonable guest room rates (can you find a room for $150 or less there on a travel site like Expedia)
  • [Optional but preferable] A place you already have some relationship with that we could springboard off of

Here are the hotels that we’ve already investigated and ruled out either because they couldn’t accommodate the con or because their rates were too high:

  • Hilton Oakland Airport
  • San Ramon Marriott
  • Hilton Garden Inn
  • Waterfront Hotel
  • Oakland Holiday Inn Express
  • Best Western Plus Bayside Hotel Oakland
  • Oakland Marriott City Center
  • The Marina Inn on San Francisco Bay
  • Coral Reef Inn & Suites
  • The Inn at Jack London Square
  • Berkeley City Club
  • The Washington Inn Hotel
  • Holiday Inn Oakland Airport
  • Oakland Convention Center
  • Courtyard Oakland Airport
  • Red Lion Oakland Hotel Airport
  • Comfort Inn and Suites (multiple locations)
  • Quality Inn (multiple locations)
  • La Quinta (multiple locations)

There are about 30 more that we’ve looked at and just from their websites could tell wouldn’t be big enough for us.

Know a place that has what we need? Please let us know! (On Comments, G+ posts, or email thewolf at bigbadcon).
