Feedback = Awesome(r) Con

Last year Big Bad Con over 200 player feedback forms to find out how we could improve the con. Once collected the data was aggregated into a spreadsheet to find out where the con was rocking, and where it was wrecking.

Here are some of the changes made in 2012 based on feedback from last year:

Private gaming rooms. Nine (9) guest rooms have been added to the convention. Want a private room for your game? Now you can request one during submittal.

Games on Demand. Last year there was a space for open gaming, but no dedicated GMs standing by ready to run games. This year, Games on Demand not only has it’s own room, but there are also GMs scheduled to be in the room, ready to run the games you want to play.

Hotel amenities improved. Last year speed was an issue, as gamers often wanted to get food in the middle of a break and didn’t have much time. This year the hotel will have a number for phone orders, so you can place the order in advance and only step away from the table to pick it up. Also, there was no clear signs where food should be picked up and ordered, and not of the staff knew about the con. This year the hotel is adding a dedicated order/pickup area (with a sign welcoming you) and the staff will all be told in advance about the con!

GMs need to step up their game. We only had a few compaints about GMs but the con staff took those seriously. I personally talked to each of the GMs to try and identify what went wrong in the game and what was needed to improve.

Inviting back GMs that rocked the house. The GMs that were loved, which was nearly all of them, have all be invited (and sometimes even cajoled when scheduling conflicts came up) to run again this year. I’m happy to say, all that can make it are coming back!

Ventilation improved. Heat was an issue last year. Because of the pipe and drape, some parts of the room didn’t have good ventilation and got stuffy. This year we’re bringing in fans, kicking up the air conditioning and lowering the drape slightly to improve air flow.

Big Bad Con listens to what you want in a con and works to make it happen. Not every request can be fulfilled (I’m sorry Gazebo Deathmatch), but every one will be looked at with careful consideration. We want this to be the best con experience you have all year!

Focused Con with a Personal Touch

There is a real advantage to Big Bad Con being small. At this size (under 300 guests) I can personally oversee every part of it from start to finish. Is my dedication to the con obsessive-compulsive? Well, yes, it probably is. Here is how you reap the benefits:

When a game fills up five minutes after registration opens, I’m on it! I start sending out emails to the GM. Can you run another instance of that game? What about a similar one? If they can’t, what other GMs do I know that could run a game with the same system? And trust me, I’ve been gaming in California for a while, I know a lot of GMs.

If a game isn’t filling up and GM won’t be able to run it, I start headhunting for just the right players. I spread the word on social networks and talk to my friends. I find people that would love the game but haven’t heard of it yet. I make sure games will run.

I put all of your games on the back of your badge. Whether you’re playing or GMing, you know what time and where all of your games are, all con long, just by looking at your badge.

I’ve built achievements based on accomplishments at the con. Did you bring canned food the Alemeda County Community food bank? We’re giving you a special pin for that. Run a game? You get a pin. Run several? You get a special pin for helping out. Compete in the Big Bad GM? You’ll have a pin to prove you were there. Tiny. Collectible. Awesome. Warning: Also sharp like The Wolf’s fangs.

During the con The Wolf and all the staff are at the reg desk, in open gaming, or walking the halls, keeping an eye out for any problems that come up. Something goes wrong, a room runs out of water, looking for a game? Just let us know and we’ll help you out.

Finally, I’m just a guy you know. I’m easy to find. You can email me anytime seannittner@gmail.com. You can find me at the con and talk to me. If you have an idea for how to improve the con, or something is giving you trouble, hit me up. I’m easy to find; I’ll be the one standing 3” off the ground because I’m so happy the con is happening.

End result: Big Bad Con 2011 ran without a snag. Gamers were in games having a great time, rather than wandering the halls looking for fun. By keeping the growth controlled (20% increase in gaming space by adding private rooms, but otherwise the con is staying small and continues to focus on RPGs and LARPs) I’m making sure that as the con expands in 2012, we’re ready to make it run like a fine oiled machine, just like last year.

Big Bad GM – The Biggest, Baddest GMs in the Land

Inspired by Iron GM, Big Bad GM pits four GMs against each other in a cage match that rocks the house.

Each contestant is randomly assigned four players and knows only that they must run a game using the Fate system. After that everything is uncertain…

Just as the competition starts, our judges reveal the secret ingredients. A genre, antagonist, and location. The GMs must brainstorm with the players, start them making characters and run a game using those secret ingredients all in four hours.

The entire experience is a blast for the GMs, players and judges alike.

What’s even better is that the players get to pick the contestants! Last year, based on the 200+ feedback forms received, we took the top rated GMs and invited them to participate this year. I’m happy to say all of them gladly accepted the challenge.

Last year the games were set in the Cyberpunk genre, located on the moon, with fairytale baddies as antagonists. I can’t wait to see what the judges roll up this year!

Big Bad Con 2012 Contestants:

Matt Steele. Terror Rabbit. Host of Dead of Winter. Big Bad Judge 2011. A force to be feared.

Mike Bogan

Mike Bogan. Winner of the EndGame GM Smackdown. Last year’s Big Bad GM contestant.

Mike Garcia. CEO of the Tower. Prop junkie. Scrappy underdog!

Scott White. MC Extraordinaire. Big Bad GM Rookie. Fresh Meat.

We Give Back

In 2016, Big Bad Con officially became a 501(c)(3) charity. And we’ve got big plans. Not only are we offering quality games at the con each October, we are developing a community outreach program to bring games to young players all year round.

Proceeds from the con and its exhibitors support the following organizations:

Ella Baker Center: We are named after Ella Baker, a brilliant, black hero of the civil rights movement. Following in her footsteps, we organize with Black, Brown, and low-income people to shift resources away from prisons and punishment, and towards opportunities that make our communities safe, healthy, and strong.

So far we’ve raised:

Doctors Without Borders Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international medical humanitarian organization working in nearly 70 countries to assist people whose survival is threatened by violence, neglect, or catastrophe. In 1999, MSF received the Nobel Peace Prize.

So far we’ve raised:

Food Bank of Contra Costa Country and Solano
Attendees can drop off non-perishable foods at the registration desk for the Food Bank of Contra Costa & Solano. The Food Bank distributes food directly to people in need through several programs and provides food to more than 190,000 people every month. At the Food Bank’s request, we now emphasize monetary contributions rather than food donations, but if you still wish to bring non-perishable food to donate, here is their shopping list of most needed items.

So far we’ve raised or collected:

In previous years when the convention took place in Oakland, we gave to the Alameda County Community Food Bank instead:

Testimonials – 2011 Rocked!

In 2011 Big Bad Con has 220 attendees. This is what they said about the con:

Do you plan to do BBC in 2012?I had a good time and want to do it again!

— Amy Echeverri

I had a fantastic time; it was just about everything I would have wanted from a convention.

— Bruce Harlick

Sean Nittner lays down the gauntlet for the other local cons. A good time was had by all.

— Rich Taylor

Congratulations again on what appeared to me to be a very successful Con! See you at the next one.

— Brian Corbin

Best RPG con in the state, hands down (I’ve been to a couple in LA). I even say it gives Gen Con a run for it’s money. As I told Sean, the attention to detail for the con was apparent and helped make it enjoyable. All in all, I’m going to be making this a regular event for me for as long as Sean can put up with running it.

— Eric Zimmerman

I had volunteered to run my 3:16 game in the Sunday Morning slot. This was my game of the weekend I think, as I had some brilliant players. The great lines were coming thicker and faster than I could tweet!

— Hamish Cameron

It’s been a blast so far. Thanks for organizing such an awesome con.

— Teryn Kravitz

What an excellent con, maybe the best I’ve been too. I have no beef with boardgamers, etc. but the intimate, roleplayers only feel of this con really went a long way. Again, great con, looking forward to the next one!

— Aaron Beagle

You did a great job, Sean. Already counting down the days until next year!

— Joey Richards

Thanks again for a kick ass weekend. I seriously had like the best time ever. Already can’t wait for next year! That was one of the best weekends I’ve had in a long time.

— Katie Stapko

I had such a fantastic time at Big Bad Con! Everything ran really smoothly, and you could tell Sean had thought out every detail ahead of time. For a newbie to the gaming world, it was the perfect introduction to new systems and games; everyone was really welcoming. I’m already looking forward to next year! Thanks again for SUCH a fun weekend, Sean. I think I’m just now starting to recover I had a blast — everyone was so nice!! Thanks for letting us newbies crash the party!
