Description:

A Cool and Lonely Courage is a tragic GM-less story game about the heroic women who volunteered to fight fascism as British secret agents working with resistance networks in Nazi-occupied France. The game begins with their capture, imprisonment, and interrogation by the Nazis, using a simple card-based mechanic for the players to cooperatively discover the lonely stories of these brave women, told in flashbacks from their arrival in France, their missions and life with the Resistance, their eventual capture, and then beyond to their ultimate end.

It is early in the Second World War. Most of Europe has fallen to the Nazis, and those that would oppose them are fragmented or stand alone. At this darkest hour, Britain forms the Special Operations Executive (SOE) to send agents into the Nazi-occupied nations to organize, arm, and coordinate the anti-fascist resistance to “set Europe ablaze” through sabotage, espionage, and assassination. People from all walks of life are recruited by the SOE, but women are specifically sought out, as SOE believes them to have “a cool and lonely courage” that made them particularly well suited for the isolated and dangerous undercover work of operating in Nazi-occupied France.

One-third of these women sent into France will never return.

While this game is very much based in the history of these women, Players do not need any special historical knowledge to play. Characters will be created at the table.
