Description:
Abyssal is a Forged in the Dark game of monsters and humans, and you are the liminal beings caught between them. Maybe you come from a family of fairy royalty or animal shapeshifters or are haunted by a ghost. Neither fully monster or human enough, you, and a few others like you, struggle to make your way while caught between two worlds.
This is a playtest of Abyssal and the city playbook of Hangtown (not yet Placerville) during the early California Gold Rush. Immigrants from around the world, particularly the Eastern US and Western Europe, have been arriving by the thousands to get rich quick, disrupting human and monster societies. From San Francisco to the gold claims of El Dorado there are housing crises, environmental disasters, opportunistic businessmen, and wars and crimes against those native to the land. Hangtown is named for its own vacuum of justice. And yet, there is also opportunity for a better future and surprising equality. Can you make a home here? Can you walk your own path? Or will you be pulled into the Abyss?
