Description:

Connie, on rollerskates, zips across the still steaming asphalt, balancing a tray of three large Sodas and four dogs; Her thoughts elsewhere, hoping for enough tips to make the last payment on a suitcase in layaway at Newberry’s.

Old Leroy squints into the light of passing headlights. His black eyes glint back at the drivers who each, in turn, avert their gaze quickly, leaving him to sweep cigarette butts into his dust bin. Their tires pepper his legs with gravel.

Jeffrey Thomas finishes loading the reel. The cannister labeled Planet of the Vampires clangs to the cement as Jeffery’s eyes begin shining with a greenish glow. He has a moment to think of drowning in the lake back home before his mind is replaced with an ancient inhuman consciousness. He picks up the ten pound iron rod, sharpened on one end, used to change out burnt carbon rods in the projector. The “CLACK” of the projector room door is drowned out by laughter and crunching popcorn from the open windows of every car as what was Jeffery lets the door fall closed behind him.

A tellurian director’s dream of sparkling uniform space appears on the towering white wall of the Olympic Drive In-Theater. Up In the sky, though hidden from view by the screen, stars are falling to earth. In moments Los Angeles will begin to burn.
