Description:
A session for people to hangout and try games and food from Southeast Asia. Ben and Mahar will commandeer a kitchen and bring in treats from Malaysia and the Philippines. Meanwhile, participants are invited to share the best things from their tables: their games and food. We can’t feed everyone, but we’ll do our best to make sure that everyone has a good time!
The panelists will give away copies of selected games. Natural 20 Gaming Goods, a Philippine-based dice crafter, is also sponsoring a few dice sets to give away during the panel.
Pamela Punzalan is a real estate broker by day, teacher and academic by training, and a full-time fangirl. She’s the founding member and editor in chief of Play Without Apology, a space that seeks to look at fannish things – particularly gaming – through a Southeast Asian, feminist/queer lens. She’s also a community manager for TRPGs in the Philippines, and has recently decided to start putting her game design out for public consumption.
Mahar Abrera Mangahas is a queer game designer from the Philippines who currently lives and works in Hong Kong. He tries to make games that are meaningful tools that reflect his cultures and background in music, theatre, and psychology. He specialises in dramaturgy, or someone who looks at the theory and practice behind a dramatic composition or narrative.
Ben Chong Xue Ren is a Bi, Chinese Malaysian tabletop game designer who makes roleplaying games about tough topics, relationships and everyday magic. Currently, he lectures in Game Design for KDU University’s Bachelor’s of Game Development (Hons). Ben is also a community organiser who hosts workshops, conventions and events for game designers, roleplaying gamers and storytellers. As a queer, Southeast Asian educator and creator, Ben hopes to instill local communities with passion and power to tell the world their own stories.

Want me to bring a couple of battery-powered lanterns?
If I don’t eat the food or take any freebies, can I show up for a little bit even if the event is full? Finding out you can now get a degree in Game Development in PJ has blown my mind in a way not seen since The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye.
Pam, Ben, and I would be glad meet anyone who’d want to talk games from the region, anytime. 🙂 Pass by if you’d like! We’ll also be around for the POC Meet & Greet. Sorry that I can’t guarantee treats! 🙁
It’s my first time at big bad, but is this an open event or do we actually need a a registered space?
So far it’s a registered space. But we’d be glad to meet anyone who’d want to talk games from the region, anytime. 🙂 Pass by if you’d like! We’ll also be around for the POC Meet & Greet, and have free time scheduled throughout the Con just to chill.
Ah, apparently I don’t have any more slots and this event counts as a slot rather than a social / workshop. Any way you can get that changed so I can sign up?
It’s a bit late now, and I know the organizers are probably in bed by the point. I’ll ask in a few hours to see if that could be done. 🙂 Still, I do hope to meet anyone interested in our SEA games!
I know this is filled up, but I’ll swing by and say ‘hi’.
I’d still be very glad to meet you!
