When all th’ hills o’ Manchester were noted, Sir Bertran de Verte, fair with armour gleaming, dide ride to the Hamlets of Hale and Bowden, by way of the Roman fort at Mamicium. Tho’ he was for sooth the veteran of many a’fray, he dide not return unto those of us who loved him, and fought by his side.
Oh where, we fear, doeth he lay? Under the stormy sky perhapse. Perhapse beneith this cursed soil. It falls now to us, his companions, to discovere the fate of our lord.
