Description:

The King looks at you, sadness in his normally warm brown eyes. There is fatigue underlying his every breath, his claws are broken, and the points of his normally perfect horns dull. He wears his armor everywhere. He has been seen much by his people these last few days, bringing up their morale, and bolstering their courage.

This private meeting with him worries you. You would not have considered yourselves close confidants of Aegroes, the King, but neither has he been a stranger. You’ve done him a good turn now and then, and you love him. He did not ask for this war.

He greets each of you in the Throne Chamber of Mount Ebb-bot, asking you not to kneel. “We do not have the time,” he says. “Here, sit,” and his chamberlain, the golden-maned beauty Orea leads you to the chairs just below his throne.

“Their wizards have begun some sort of ritual. Our magics are almost exhausted, and our troops are thick with dust across the fields.” He sighs through his nostrils, bits of smoke fading into the darkness.

“We will lose. There is no hope left for peace.” He straightens, and his jaw sets, thick curved teeth jutting slightly from his lower lip. “All we can hope is for survival.”

“You. The four of you must find out what this ritual is. I do not expect you to be able to stop it. I do not even,” there is a catch in his voice, “believe all of you will return. All I hope is that you do your best. This journey will take Determination.”
