Description:
There are common threads between tabletop roleplaying game design and video game design, and there’s no better way to explore them but to try and adapt a video game as a ttrpg. Join Pam Punzalan in this panel as she talks about turning video games into tabletop RPGs. She’ll talk method, theory, themes, storytelling, and some practical advice she’s developed through her own process.
Panelists
Pam Punzalan (she/they) is a queer Filipino designer whose personal work explores themes of intimacy, rebellion, loss, reclamation, and the many different shades of violence. Beyond design, she is an editor, sensitivity & cultural consultant, and advocate for RPGSEA (Roleplaying Games Southeast Asia). Participating in the building of multiple, diverse tables for the tabletop game industry is a deeply important engagement for her, and she has had the pleasure of being part of the organizing teams of Play Without Apology, a queer-centric collective in the Philippines, and Session Zero Online, an RPGSEA-centric convention for Southeast Asian game designers and enthusiasts. She has written for Evil Hat, Paizo, Wizards of the Coast, and Renegade Games Studio.
Liana MacKenzie (she/her) is the co-creator of Valor: the Heroic Roleplay System and owner of Valorous Games. Having been inspired by the Anime and JRPGs she has watched and played since childhood, she works to bring games that capture that style to the tabletop RPG space.
Adira Slattery (she/her) is a trans Jewish game designer and poet in Chicago. Her work explores intimacy, comedy, hope, and futility.
Joaquin Saavedra (he/they) is a writer and game designer that enjoys diving deep into a past unacknowledged and bringing it up through Fiction and Fantasy. He has been writing for most of his life, starting with fanfiction of video games, until he cultivated a love for hermeneutics, semiotics, and anthropology, and applied these in his burgeoning career as a Role-Playing Game designer and web serialist. His favorite book is Shri-Bishaya by Ramon Muzones and he loves quoting Ocean Vuong.
Collette Quach (they/she) is an award winning writer and game designer based in California. They strive to design experiences that allow us to discuss difficult topics and help us understand what it means to be human. They also have a passion for diversity and inclusion both at an industry and design level. Collette tells stories about Asian diaspora, the queer experience, and the intersections between the two.
