Description:

Dear Participant,

We are pleased to accept your application to the Companionship Artificial Intelligence pilot study at the University of California Walnut Creek. We invite you to attend our orientation session this weekend, where you will meet the graduate students conducting the research, learn more about the study and make first contact with the Companionship AI entity you will be interacting with over the course of the six-week study.

We are excited for this first field test of our groundbreaking new Companionship AI technology. Our lab trials have been highly successful, and our hope is that by participating in this pilot study you will help us introduce a valuable new product to the market, that will enrich the lives of many.

Regards,
The Cognition Institute
UC Walnut Creek

Here is My Power Button, by Brodie Atwater, is a Larp about artificial intelligences and the people who interact with them. A research group at a fictional modern-day university is running a study on human-AI interaction. Half of the players will play advanced companion AIs, and the other half will play humans getting to know them. Players will be paired off so that each human is assigned an individual AI, and the pairs will get to know each other over the course of several meetings.

Over the course of the game, each human-AI pair will get to know each other better and better, and develop a relationship of some kind. That is, unless the human decides to reset their assigned AI to factory defaults, which is an option that can be taken at the beginning of each meeting.

This game can range in tone from light to extremely intimate, and the facilitators will make sure that pairs are assigned in such a way that play partners have the same expectations at the start of play. If you and another player specifically want to be paired up together, that’s great — we’ll do that. Either way there will be steps taken to make sure you and your partner are on the same page in terms of tone and content.
